Kidney Care Leader Dialyze Direct Grows Leadership Team as it Expands Nationally
BROOKLYN, N.Y., — Dialyze Direct, LLC, a leader in patient-focused treatment modalities to improve quality of life for people suffering from kidney disease, announced today that Gerald “Jerry” Levin, former CEO of Time Warner and Executive Chairman of StartUp Health, has joined Dialyze Direct as Chief Mission Officer and Chairman of Dialyze Innovations, the division of the company focused on clinical, technological and organizational advancements in the management of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
Jerry has recently been diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease, and will bring personal experience as a geriatric dialysis patient to Dialyze Direct to drive patientcentered innovation. Jerry is dedicated to the exploration of an advanced outcomedriven in-home dialysis model, in which healthcare professionals are able to provide more compassionate and holistic care. Dialyze Direct’s innovative home hemodialysis care model, which incorporates gentler, more frequent dialysis with a focus on coordinated care and patient comfort, has demonstrated exceptional clinical outcomes for the medically complex geriatric dialysis patient population in the challenging nursing home environment in eight states, with rapid nationwide expansion underway.
“As we remain unsettled by the downward spiral brought on by ineluctable aging, I have determined in the face of the odds at 80 to give my voice, however faint, to society’s nether world of kidney disease and brighten the prospects of these forgotten souls with caring and complete support and love. The beautiful infrastructure to bring about this change is nestled in the brilliant arms of Dialyze Direct,” Jerry stated.
“Henry, Josh and their mighty force of social entrepreneurs have rescued a massive forgotten demographic of elderly dialysis patients from the throws of common dialysis with an unbreakable commitment to human dignity, materialized in extraordinary clinical outcomes. As all stakeholders respond to the now very public social, financial and operational discords of kidney care with an outcry for innovation, Dialyze Direct has already begun scaling an exemplary model which can and should be a model for the whole dialysis market.
I share with this team the yearning to produce solid healing protocols across all of kidney care by tearing down the existing curtain and ushering in a free and open template of patient grace. Such entrepreneurship knows no boundaries, no fear, only the power of peace.”
Henry Kauftheil, Chairman and Co-Founder of Dialyze Direct stated: “Medicare spends around $35 billion each year on care for those with end-stage renal disease, yet dialysis hasn’t changed substantially in nearly fifty years. As Dialyze Direct continues our rapid expansion of our proven care model across the United States, we are excited for Jerry to bring his extraordinary leadership experience, and his uniquely personal experience with dialysis to our mission to significantly improve all aspects of kidney care. We are honored to have him come on board.”
About Kidney Disease
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 30 million people in the United States (15% of the US population) have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States. End-stage renal disease (ESRD), also called kidney failure, is the last stage of CKD. With ESRD, the kidneys are no longer able to filter wastes and excess fluid from the body, causing toxic levels of fluid, electrolytes and wastes to build up in the blood, which makes dialysis or a kidney transplant necessary. According to the United States Renal Data System (USRDS), more than 700,000 people in the United States are being treated for ESRD, more than 500,000 of which are receiving dialysis, numbers which are on the rise. The annual Medicare spending to treat ESRD in the U.S. is approximately $35 billion.
